If you’ve ever built or remodeled a home — or even just thought about it — you’ve probably heard the same stories: it’s stressful, it’s overwhelming, everything costs more than you expected, and something always goes wrong. Trades in and out before I can finish my coffee, trucks lined up down the driveway, decisions happening on the spot, and about fifty things moving at once. What you see happening on-site is only half the story; behind all that, there are layers of design decisions being made before anyone ever picks up a nail gun.

This week is the “construction side.” Next week will cover the “design side.”
In real life, those two aren’t separate at all — they overlap constantly. I’m only dividing them here so this doesn’t turn into a 10-page novel.
So here’s everything we accomplished on the construction side in just two short weeks… and why an experienced design–build team makes all the difference.
🔨 Siding, Trim & Exterior Details: Where Precision Matters
Siding week is always exciting — the house finally starts looking livable. But it’s also the stage where every tiny detail matters. Vinyl, Hardie board, or anything in between — if the edges don’t line up, you’ll see it every day.
While the crew worked outside, I was inside juggling lighting layouts, cabinet hardware, and furniture measurements. In new construction, nothing waits its turn. Everything overlaps, and if someone isn’t watching the whole picture, things go sideways fast.
This is where a good builder–designer team earns their keep — keeping all the moving parts moving together.
Trim day always feels like a makeover — when the house starts getting its “pretty edges.”

🪚 Drywall, Cabinets & Trim: The House Finally Starts Taking Shape
Drywall is such a turning point — the moment the house shifts from construction zone to “home.” Once drywall went up, trim started, and cabinets rolled in, the whole place leapt from “studs and sawdust” to real, defined rooms.
Installing cabinets: where the most-used phrases are “hold that right there” and “is this level?”
This is also when design and construction start dancing — sometimes gracefully, sometimes not.

Because suddenly, every design choice affects something physical:
cabinet sizes → outlet placement
crown molding → ceiling and lighting details
stair treads → flooring transitions
window trim → paint choices
drywall dimensions → tile layout
This is why having a designer on-site isn’t a luxury — it’s essential. One tiny decision can snowball into a hundred problems. A strong team keeps everything aligned so your home looks intentional, not accidental.
✨ And Then There’s the Trim That Deserves Its Own Applause…
This stage is also where our master carpenter, Mike Fritz, shines. Mike isn’t just skilled — he’s creative. He’ll suggest cleaner edges, smarter lines, sharper details, and as long as it stays within budget, I want him to run with it. When a carpenter has both vision and discipline, you keep him.
The staircase? Solid, clean, beautifully proportioned.

The MDF shiplap fireplace? A major focal point — and it’s going to be stunning once it’s painted.

And if you think these early photos look good… just wait until paint, stain, and décor touch them. Mmm. So exciting!
Trim really is the icing on the cake. I may bring ideas, but Mike brings them to life. A true master carpenter is worth every penny.
🚿 Master Shower Tile: Waterproofing Isn’t the Only Priority
Once the tile crew showed up, things got real in the master shower. This is another one of those phases where the pretty and technical parts collide — and honestly, it’s where a lot of homeowners get overwhelmed. Tile isn’t just “What color do you like?” or “Let’s grab something cute from Pinterest.”
Every single detail matters. Every. Single. One.
We’re talking about:
grout contrast (yes, it changes everything)
niche symmetry (if it’s off, trust me… you’ll stare at it forever)
drain placement
sheen and texture
tile direction
waterproofing layers
corner pieces
and how the whole thing flows visually with the bathroom
And now let’s talk subway tile a brief moment — bless it, the poor thing gets overlooked as “plain” because it’s not flashy or screaming for attention. But here’s the truth:
Subway tile is not basic. It is timeless.
Tile trends come and go — glass tile, mosaics, bold mixes, 12x24s in those very “specific” neutral tones (hi, Tuscan gold/yellow era… we remember you). Those styles mark a decade. Subway tile marks a century.
If you want something unique? Change the lay: herringbone, basketweave, stacked vertical, stacked horizontal, or a soldier course. So many options.
For this home, we went with a classic white brick lay subway tile, paired with Mapei Avalanche grout for a soft, seamless look that doesn’t make your eyes jump from line to line. Clean. Calm. Forever in style.

Tile can be a lot. Lots of decisions to consider: and if one piece gets installed wrong, suddenly you’re living with a very expensive reminder. This is where a designer + builder team is worth their weight in gold. We know what to look for, what to avoid, and what absolutely cannot be “close enough.” Tile regrets are real — ask me how I know. 🙃
🧱 Concrete Driveway & Sidewalk Forms: Function + Aesthetics
Driveways don’t have to be straight and boring. A simple curve can soften the whole approach and add a natural feel — even in the backyard, which is where this one lives.

This week, driveway curves and sidewalks were formed — the house finally started feeling anchored to the land.
The builder focuses on slope, drainage, and grading. The designer is thinking curb appeal, proportion, and how it feels to pull in every day.
When both perspectives work together, you get a driveway that functions beautifully and looks intentional.

🌱 Early Landscaping: Preparing Beds, Slope & Soil
Landscaping is one of those stages people tend to label as “the pretty part,” but honestly… it lives in this funny in-between space. Some folks consider it construction, some consider it design, and the truth is? It’s both. The build team handles the grading, drainage, and prep. The design side handles plant selection, layering, sun exposure, and curb appeal. It’s the perfect example of how tightly the two worlds overlap.
Before a single shrub even touches the ground, the graders have to shape the entire lot so rainwater actually moves away from the house — gutters, downspouts, and natural slope all working together. Get that wrong, and you’ll be fighting water issues for years.
Once the grade is right, the soil has to be right. Rowan County is basically made of clay, and nothing thrives in clay unless you amend it. A good landscaper knows this. Experience has taught us that healthy soil is the start of healthy landscaping — period.

And even though this home didn’t budget for full irrigation, new shrubs don’t stand a chance without consistent water for the first few weeks, months, and honestly the first couple of years. So we installed a simple drip line along the foundation beds just to give everything a fighting chance.
Then comes plant selection — and this is where a lot of homeowners (and even some landscapers) get into trouble. You have to consider
sun direction
shade tolerance
mature plant size
layering
seasonal color
fragrance
zone (we’re Zone 7b!)
I’ve seen arborvitae and hollies planted right up against a house, and within a few years, they’re practically knocking on the windows. Direction matters too — full sun vs. afternoon sun vs. shade can make or break a plant. And yes… porches are perfect for fragrant shrubs like gardenias or lilacs if the sun exposure is right.
